Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
with Lancaster Public Library

It has served the community for 250 years and continues today to evolve with our culture and technology.
The Library at Duke Street currently has approximately 100 volunteers who work with staff in the areas listed below. We welcome your interest and participation.
VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
Volunteers are expected to sign up for 2-5 hours a week or every other week. We rely on our volunteers and consistency is important. However, some of the opportunities are more flexible such as the Bookstore and Computer Tutors and First Friday Committee. Please contact the Volunteer Coordinator to explore any of the descriptions listed below.
- Circulation Department – shelving – processing DVDs, shelf-reading. Shelvers choose day and time between 8am and 8pm Monday through Thursday or Fridays and Saturdays until 5.
- Collection Development – repairing books, processing incoming books, some computer knowledge is useful
- Computer Classes – Adult Services – a broad range of computer classes are taught by volunteers who work in teams of two in the evenings, mornings and Saturdays. Classes are offered in 4 week sessions and rotate throughout the year. Class size is limited to 10 and is taught in our computer training room.
- Youth Services Department – shelving, book repairs, preparing crafts for programs and story times; summer reading program assistance or video gaming support. We are currently looking for a knitter to teach teens.
- Juliana Bookstore – help to staff, organize, and provide excellent customer service in our used book store at the Library. Schedules are flexible with on-line sign ups.
- First Friday Committee – work with a group of young professionals to create a First Friday experience for Families. Committee members choose artists, do publicity, cooking for the event, organize children’s activities and hang the exhibits.
- Display Expertise – Create attractive displays for our outside and inside displays. Graphic design experience and creativity are much appreciated along with the ability to create magic with limited resources.
- Friends Group – Assist our newly forming Friends Group is in search of volunteers to assist with fund-raising, advocacy and special programs.
Branch Library Volunteers - circulation duties such as helping customers identify and locate materials, check-in and check-out of materials, and shelving at the branches described above
Book Sale Activities at Book Resort –
- EBay Sales – responsible for describing condition of books and entering information on EBay for sale by auction. Follows the progress of the auction and ships books to successful bidders.
- Book Sorting/Pricing – volunteers are needed to sort books into categories for semi-annual book sales. Selected items will be researched on the Internet for pricing and possible sale on EBay auctions or in the Retail Store. These volunteer activities are ongoing throughout the year.
- Warehouse Assistant Manager – assist Warehouse Manager in facilities functions, including planning for transport activities to and from semi-annual book sales and ongoing warehouse activities supporting donations and sorting of books.
- Book Sales, Spring and Fall – set up, selling shifts during sale, and tear down are fun opportunities to help this huge enterprise. Sales are held at Overlook Activities Center.
- Juliana Book Store (2nd Floor of Duke St. Library): Selling shifts, stocking, etc.
