Ongoing Volunteer Opportunities
with North Museum of Natural History and Science

Close to downtown Lancaster, the North Museum of Natural History & Science opens the window to the worlds of natural history and science.  Volunteering at the North Museum lets you explore, discover and gain new experiences as you serve in a variety of support roles. The following opportunities are available for immediate participation.

Museum Guide & Docent
Involves contact with the general public. Responsibilities include providing visitors with specific information about the current exhibits on display, demonstrate inter-actives and guide visitors through the Museum if required. An experienced museum guide has the option to become a docent and lead scheduled tour groups through the museum.

  • Experience & Skills Required: Educational, training or customer service experience is not required but is helpful. You must have the ability to interact with people of diverse ages, genders, races, cultures and beliefs. A professional and courteous demeanor is required. Expertise knowledge of specific subject areas is not necessary. Training is provided.
  • Availability: Weekday and/or weekend opportunities. A regular or flexible schedule is acceptable.

Office Assistant
Assist with routine office duties based on the volunteer’s experience. Responsibilities may include tasks such as filing, distribution, copying, data entry or clerical related projects such as sorting and folding documents and stuffing envelopes.

  • Experience & Skills Required: Any office experience is helpful but NOT required. The ability to operate office equipment and computers is not necessary but volunteers with these skills will be matched with tasks appropriate to the level of their skills.
  • Availability: Weekday opportunities are most prevalent but some weekend and/or take work home is permitted if requested. A regular or flexible schedule is acceptable.

Visitor Services Assistant
Involves daily contact with the general public and is one of our most comprehensive volunteer positions. It entails a variety of responsibilities such as assisting at the Front Counter to check in visitors, to assist with the Museum Gift Shop and to provide visitors with general information as to museum hours, admission and membership fees, planetarium show schedule, and current exhibits. Detailed knowledge of exhibits and planetarium is not necessary.

  • Experience & Skills Required: Customer service and/or retail experience is helpful but NOT required. You must have the ability to interact with people of diverse ages, genders, races, cultures and beliefs. A professional and courteous demeanor is required. Training is provided.
  • Availability: Weekday and/or weekend opportunities. A regular or flexible schedule is acceptable.

Collections Assistant & Curator
Assist in the collections and exhibits departments. Responsibilities are assigned based on experience and may include routine tasks such as packaging items, setting up exhibits and data entry or more advanced tasks such as evaluating and cataloging collections. Collections include subjects such as paleontology, anthropology, archaeology, botany, geology, ornithology and more.

  • Experience & Skills Required: Experience as a hobbyist or professional in the areas of geology, paleontology, anthropology, archaeology, botany and ornithology. A genuine interest or desire to learn any of these areas is required. Some training is provided.
  • Availability: Weekday opportunities – a regular or flexible schedule is acceptable.

Live Animal Room Attendant
Assist in caring for the live animals, insects, reptiles and their habitats. You may handle live specimens in public and provide general information about them to visitors. Live animal room volunteers must be 18 years old.

  • Experience & Skills Required: Knowledge and ability to handle reptiles and insects. Background in working with reptiles and insects is helpful but NOT required. Some training is provided.
  • Availability: Weekday and/or weekend opportunities. A regular or flexible schedule is acceptable.

Educational Assistant
Provides assistance or training in a classroom, a hands on display or lecture setting. The educational program may be conducted in either the museum or at a location within the community such as a school.

  • Experience & Skills Required: Educational, teaching, training or customer service background is preferred but not required. You must have the ability to interact with people of diverse ages, genders, races, cultures and beliefs. A professional and courteous demeanor is required. Expertise in a specific subject area is not necessary. Training is provided.
  • Availability: Weekday and/or weekend opportunities. A regular or flexible schedule is acceptable.

Handy Helper       
Completes a large variety of odd jobs and routine maintenance projects such as general cleaning, painting, carpentry, electrical, gardening, landscaping or plumbing that keep the building and exhibits functional. If inexperienced the volunteer may “assist” with projects if needed.

  • Experience & Skills Required: “Trade related” skills are helpful but not required. Some training is provided.
  • Availability: Weekday and/or weekend opportunities. May be used on an “as needed” basis.
